We have come from Jewish, Christian, and secular backgrounds. We are seekers, drawing wisdom and strength from the teachings and practices of the traditions of our childhoods and the traditions we have come to treasure since. We gain insight and inspiration from the gifts of poets and scientists, musicians and mystics. Our free faith, our covenantal faith ~ this faith worthy of our lives and times ~ is best formed when experience is passed through the fire of Reason (Emerson) and those insights so refined are then tested in community. We gather to reason together, to encourage each other to live fully, faithful to the deepest we know. We gather together to hold up and give from our ability to make beauty, bring healing, create peace, and bend the world toward justice. OUR UNITARIAN UNIVERSALIST PRINCIPLES Our principles and sources of faith form the backbone of our religious community. UNITARIAN UNIVERSALISM (UU) DRAWS FROM MANY SOURCES... • Direct experience of that transcending mystery and wonder, affirmed in all cultures, which moves us to a renewal of the spirit and an openness to the forces which create and uphold life • Words and deeds of prophetic women and men which challenge us to confront powers and structures of evil with justice, compassion, and the transforming power of love • Wisdom from the world’s religions which inspires us in our ethical and spiritual life • Jewish and Christian teachings which call us to respond to God’s love by loving our neighbors as ourselves • Humanist teachings which counsel us to heed the guidance of reason and the results of science, and warn us against idolatries of the mind and spirit • Spiritual teachings of earth-centered traditions which celebrate the sacred circle of life and instruct us to live in harmony with the rhythms of nature A BIT OF HISTORY... In 1961, The American Unitarian Association and The Universalist Church of America merged to become The Unitarian Universalist Association (UUA). In that same year, The Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of Boca Raton had its first meeting! Our long name reflects a long history and tradition of reason, tolerance, and justice seeking, called for by a deep faith in that transcendent power that has been called by many names – God, Love, Truth, Life itself, “the pulse that through the green fuse drives”. Our Unitarian and Universalist ancestors were both named, centuries ago, for heresies within Christianity. In the 1600s, Unitarians like Francis David of Transylvania and Miguel Servetus of Spain, proclaimed one God. They were also known as anti-trinitarians. In the 1700s, Universalists like George De Benniville and John Murray taught that salvation was open to all. Proud of the courage behind our heretical history, we champion each person’s religious quest as we abide by our principles and purposes HAVE QUESTIONS? The month of June was chosen for LGBT Pride Month to commemorate the Stonewall riots, which occurred at the end of June 1969. As a result, many pride events are held during this month to recognize the impact LGBT people have had in the world.

It was a beautiful Flower Communion yesterday. The Flower Communion Service, originated by the Rev. Norbert F. Capek in his native Czechoslovakia in 1923, it is widely celebrated in Unitarian Universalist congregations today. Every spring, most of our churches and fellowships devote a Sunday to this festive participatory service which celebrates both the earth's beauty and humanity's oneness. In addition, the Flower Communion Service celebrates beauty, human uniqueness, diversity, and community. While difficult, this is a must read for all who love, work with, and nurture children. This story is also a stark reminder that the vast majority of sexual abusers are people we know and trust. They are not "strangers." Abusers groom parents as well as children. They take specific interest in being alone with the children they target and strive to build up a relationship wherein secrecy can exist. Teach your children that when any adult asks them to keep secrets it is a red flag, a sign of a "tricky person" and that tricky people can be people we love. Teach your children "stay safe rules" and reinforce them with clarity, compassion, strength. Teach your children the difference between a safe secret (like a birthday surprise) and the kind of secret that tricky people use: ("Let's watch this video on my phone, your parents wouldn't understand it, so we will keep it as a special secret just between us.") Three quotes from the article: “I’ve been married and divorced four times. And I will stand up and say right now it’s probably because of the simple fact that I built a shell to protect myself because of the trauma,” he says... “This is the normal way to learn about sex,” Pittson recalls the Scoutmaster telling him. “He said, ‘But don’t tell your parents what I’m doing. They wouldn’t think you’re mature enough. They wouldn’t understand.’”... "Hundreds of individual sex abuse cases have been brought against the Scouts over the last several decades, and in 2010, a judge ordered the organization to make public an internal list of men accused of preying on boys. Within Scout headquarters, the list was known as the 'P Files' or 'Perversion Files.' In January, a child abuse expert hired by the Boy Scouts to analyze the files testified that she found 12,254 boys had reported experiencing sexual abuse at the hands of at least 7,800 suspected assailants between 1944 and 2016. Academics who research child sex abuse tell TIME that number is likely a gross underestimation. Many boys were likely intimidated or shamed out of reporting their assailants, who often held influential positions in local churches, schools, or businesses." http://time.com/longform/boy-scouts-sex-abuse/

On this Valentines week, I wanted to continue the story of love and friendship that has gone on with our Pearl City neighbors and DISC for so many years, UUFBR and Healing Justice celebrated Martin Luther King Day events on January 21, 2019 with our many friends. We participated in this event for many years. Our minister, the Rev. Harris Riordan has continued to participate with other clergy for many years and continued to do so this year. Please note the photos capturing some of our members and others participating in this event. One of the entries in the Art Contest at Sanborn Square commemorating Dr. King. Artist: Victoria Mullings . The quote on her entry says it all and fits with today's sermon at UUFBR (February 10, 2019). The focus was love. "I have decided to stick with love. Hate is too much of a burden to bear." (Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.). Our young UU's proudly and seriously carried our banner. From left to right are Braeden Brown, Owen Haley and Sofia Valdez. Two parents who marched beside them are Alison Rognas and Stacie Brown. Healing Justice member Joe Selin marched right behind Owen Haley. Carrying their banner are our DISC friends and neighbors, Marjorie O'Sullivan and John E. Brown. Behind them, just ahead of the Trolley, are Rick and Sandy Troiano of UUFBR and members of Healing Justice. All faiths marched in Solidarity. All of us together. Check out the back of the bus. Imagine my surprise when I picked up my soggy rain infused copy of the Boca Times. Here is what I found, LOL. And there we are, behind the joyous participant who is singing loud and clear. Each week, she strives to make a short video updating the community of the current themes of the RE program and the upcoming topics/events so parents (and all) can be aware of our lively/experiential/heartfelt curriculum that draws upon on both our UU heritage and the world's wisdom traditions.
